Is This the Sea?
These works were produced during an intensive 10-day period in a studio on the north-east coast of Scotland in February 2006. Various texts that look at the sea from widely different linguistic angles (from tide tables, OS Maps and dictionary entry lists, to the poetry of T.S. Eliot and pages from Virginia Woolf’s To The Lighthouse) offer shifting perspectives whilst ultimately failing to remotely convey the full experience of the sea. The initial inspiration for the pieces came from a song entitled This Is The Sea by The Waterboys. In a very real sense the pieces are not about the sea at all but about a potential ‘wholeness’ of experience that might be symbolised by the sea.
