Mick graduated in 1993 from Glasgow University with a first class M.A.(Hons) in History of Art. Studying and handling medieval manuscripts in the University library inspired a love of calligraphy and since leaving Glasgow he has studied with many of the foremost calligraphers and lettering artists in this country. For the last five years he has been a delegate at the International Calligraphy Symposia held at the University of Sunderland. Here he has worked with internationally acclaimed tutors and alongside lettering practitioners from all over the world. In 2004 he completed the three-year Advanced Training Scheme run by The Society of Scribes and Illuminators.
Mick is a selected member of Design Factory, an organisation committed to supporting the development of designer/makers in the East Midlands, and has recently exhibited in two showcase exhibitions, and received a bursary award.
In 2005 he was awarded Arts Council England funding for professional development and training.
Mick has recently had work published in the US journal Letter Arts Review and in October 2006 he was selected to be part of the Crafts Council’s Springboard feature area at Origin at Somerset House, a showcase designed to promote the work of ‘the most exciting emerging makers’.
In November 2006 Mick completed a major commission as part of the Art at the Arc programme at Geldards law firm in Nottingham.
Mick has his studio at the Bend in the River gallery in Gainsborough.
